Dave Gilkes started his career as an apprentice bricklayer and before long was running a small bricklaying team of his own. After working in the Pilbara in a wide variety of construction roles, he relocated with his family to the South West where he became a registered builder.

In 2019 he gained his building licence and starting Gilkes Building Solutions. In 2024, Dave and the team were honoured to be recognised by the Master Builders Association (MBA) with a building excellence award.

2026 - Overview of the winning project

To meet the demands of a growing extended family our client was keen to increase the rooms available at her holiday home. After initially exploring an extension to the main house, BAL concerns resulted in an alternative design to convert the existing garage into a bedroom with ensuite.

The bedroom layout was designed to be self-sufficient to include an ensuite, kitchenette and living space while creating an open feel inside and out. The design involved consultation with our energy assessor in order to convert the garage into a comfortable living space and meet compliance requirements. This included blow in cavity insulation to the existing double brick and Low E glazing to the sliding doors and ensuite window. 

The biggest challenge was locating the 100mm septic drain to connect the ensuite and kitchenette waste. This involved removing the entire ensuite floor and sections of the timber deck directly outside to be able to penetrate through the wall and connect in to. 

The roof members were framed to allow a plasterboard ceiling to follow the curve of the rafters with a VJ feature board installed on the main bedroom wall. The original garage opening was enclosed with double sliding doors and louvred windows either side to increase natural air flow. The sliding doors led out into a composite deck entertaining area with privacy screen and gate access.
